Scholarships


Undergraduates are eligible for the following funding opportunities for undergraduate study abroad (please contact the relevant offices for information about deadlines).

General Scholarships

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program

This program offers a competition for awards for study abroad, for US citizen students who are receiving federal Pell Grant funding at a 2-year or 4-year college or university. Award amounts are $3,000 for summer programs and $5,000 for a semester or academic year. Contact the appropriate Penn Abroad regional program manager.

David L. Boren Undergraduate Scholarships for Study Abroad

Under the auspices of the National Security Education Program, supports undergraduate study abroad focusing on geographical areas, languages, and fields of study deemed critical to US national security. (Excludes study in US, Canada, Western Europe, Australia, and New Zealand.) These US government grants entail a service obligation. Contact the appropriate Penn Abroad regional program manager.

Institute for International Public Policy (IIPP) Fellowships

The IIPP Fellowship program seeks to provide underrepresented minority undergraduates with the skill, confidence, and support networks that contribute to success in the international arena and create a diverse talent pool of well-trained and language-proficient internationalists. Students are recruited from across the nation and apply as sophomores to participate in a five-year sequence of summer policy institutes, study abroad, intensive language training, internships, and graduate study. National Security Education Program (NSEP)Undergraduate Scholarships

Thomas R. Pickering Foreign Affairs Fellowships

Provides undergraduate and graduate funding to participants to prepare academically and professionally to enter the US Dept. of State Foreign Service. Targets particularly women and members of minority groups historically underrepresented in the foreign service. Administered by the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation (http://www.woodrow.org/).

Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarships

Generous support for study at a university in any country where Rotary is active. Applications may be due as early as 17 months before study is scheduled to begin. Contact your hometown Rotary Club for information.

William A. Levi Travel Fellowship

For Penn undergraduates currently receiving financial aid to participate in selected Penn Summer Abroad programs, e.g., Argentina, Czech Republic, India, Korea, Poland, Russia, Tanzania. Contact Penn Summer Abroad, College of Liberal and Professional Studies, 3440 Market Street, Suite 100.

Regional Scholarships

Amici Prize

Offsets expenses for undergraduate research in Italian Studies conducted in conjunction with one of Penn's programs for studying in Italy during the summer or academic year. Contact the Center for Italian Studies, 549 Williams Hall.

Bridging Scholarships for Study Abroad in Japan

The Association of Teachers of Japanese (ATJ) offers grants for undergraduates in any field to study abroad in Japan. Contact the appropriate Penn Abroad regional program manager.

British Universities Transatlantic Exchange Association (BUTEX) North American Scholarships

BUTEX offers eight scholarships to North American students studying at a university in the United Kingdom. The value of each scholarship is £500 and will be paid to the winners once they have arrived and registered at their host university. Contact the appropriate Penn Abroad regional program manager.

DAAD/German Academic Exchange Service Prizes and Scholarships

Prizes for stays of two to three months in Germany in conjunction with independent senior thesis research, language or other summer course at a German university, internship/practicum at a German institution or company. Scholarships for undergraduate semester or academic year abroad (four to ten months at a German university. Contact the appropriate Penn Abroad regional program manager.

Masa Scholarships

Provides partial funding to students studying at any university in Israel. Contact the appropriate Penn Abroad regional program manager.

Melvin M. Goldberg Fellowship

Provides partial funding to SEAS students for up to one year of research in Israel. May be used during summer between junior and senior year, as well as for seniors and graduate students. Contact Joseph Sun, SEAS, 111 Towne Building.

Minority International Research and Training Program

MHIRT grantees conduct research for at least 10-12 weeks during the summer or one semester during the academic year on a wide variety of diseases and health conditions. The MHIRT Program participants travel to work with international investigators in countries around the world such as Mexico, Uganda, Ghana, Australia, Peru, Spain and South Africa. Monbusho Scholarships

One-year scholarship offered the Japanese Ministry of Education, Science, and Culture for advanced Japanese language and culture study at a Japanese university. Contact the appropriate Penn Abroad regional program manager.

The Society of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick

The society of the Friendly Sons of Saint Patrick are pleased to announce that they are seeking applications for the Society's grants for students planning to study in Ireland. Applicants must be in good academic standing having completed their sophomore year by June 2009 with a cumulative average of at least 3.0.

Applicants must submit an official college transcript, a letter of recommendation from an academic adviser or faculty member who has taught the student, evidence of acceptance in a college-level program of study in Ireland, and a brief essay (600 to 800 words) on one or more of the following topics: 1. how the program in Ireland will relate to your studies at Penn 2. how the experience in Ireland will deepen your understanding of Irish history and culture 3. why you are interested in obtaining a Society grant

There will be two grants awarded, in the amount of $4,000 each. Applications must be received by June 25, 2009. The Society will announce the awards by August 7, 2009.

Scholarship recipients are required to submit a two page report following their semester in Ireland. This should include a list of courses completed and a description of special experiences while studying abroad. Please send your application to John J. Program Specific Scholarships

ACTR/ACCELS Grants

Partial funding provided to support language training in Russian and other East European and Central Asian languages on study abroad programs sponsored by ACTR/ACCELS. Contact the appropriate Penn Abroad regional program manager.

American University in Cairo: Simpson Scholarships in Egyptology

Partial funding for one or two semesters of study during the junior or senior year at AUC requiring three courses per semester in the field of Egyptology. Contact the appropriate Penn Abroad regional program manager.

Ben Gurion University of the Negev, Center for International Student Programs

Partial funding for applicants to the BGU Overseas Student Program who can demonstrate financial need. Contact Shaina Adams, Office of International Programs or Office of Student Service, Ben Gurion University of the Negev, 342 Madison Ave., Suite 1224, New York, NY 10173.

Benedetta and Giancarlo Galassi-Beria Scholarship

Partial tuition support for students with documented financial need to participate in the Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies semester in Rome. Contact the appropriate Penn Abroad regional program manager.

Berlin Scholarships

The scholarship covers a one-year study enrollment, a monthly stipend of 700 Euros for the duration of 11 months, and an accompanying program of social and cultural activities throughout the year. Students study at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin or at one of its partner institutions: Freie Universität Berlin, Technische Universität Berlin, Universität der Künste Berlin, and Fachhochschule für Wirtschaft Berlin. Boston University Study Abroad Grants

Partial funding for applicants with strong academic qualifications and documented financial need to participate in Penn approved programs in Beijing, Madrid, Moscow, and Padova sponsored by Boston University. Contact the appropriate Penn Abroad regional program manager.

Bowman Travel Grants

Travel grants to encourage participation in educational programs and service projects sponsored by the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) in the developing nations of Africa, Asia, Latin America, and Eastern Europe. Contact the appropriate Penn Abroad regional program manager.

CIEE/IFSP Scholarships

Partial funding for applicants with strong academic qualifications and documented financial need to participate in Penn approved programs in East Asia, Southeast Asia, and Latin America sponsored by the Council on International Educational Exchange. CIEE/US Department of Education Financial Aid for Chinese Language Study

Partial funding to pursue Mandarin Chinese language study at Peking University or Nanjing University. Contact the appropriate Penn Abroad regional program manager.

Hebrew University of Jerusalem/Rothberg International School Scholarships

Partial funding for applicants to the Rothberg International School who can demonstrate financial need. Contact Shaina Adams, Office of International Programs or Office of Academic Affairs, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, 11 East 69th St., New York, NY 10021.

IFSA-Butler Study Grants

Partial funding for applicants with strong academic qualifications and documented financial need to participate in Penn approved programs in Argentina, Chile, and Cuba sponsored by the Cooperating Programs in the Americas/Institute for Study Abroad. Jennifer Ritzmann Scholarship

Supports study at the CIEE Study Center in Monteverde, Costa Rica. Contact the appropriate Penn Abroad regional program manager.

King's Excellence Awards

Partial funding to students studying at King's College. Each award is worth £2,500 for students studying one semester, or £3,500 for students studying at King’s for the whole academic year. A maximum of five awards are given each semester. Contact the appropriate Penn Abroad regional program manager.

London School of Economics (LSE) John C Phelan General Course Scholarship

LSE gives three scholarships, each worth £7,000. This scholarship is available for study on the General Course. It will be awarded on the basis of academic merit and financial need. Applicants must be American nationals and currently living in the USA. The deadline for the receipt of applications is: 24 April 2009. Contact the appropriate Penn Abroad regional program manager.

Robert B. Bailey III Minority Student Scholarships for Education Abroad

Promotes increased participation in international study programs sponsored by the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) by members of groups which have traditionally underrepresented in study abroad. May be used only on CIEE programs approved for Penn credit. Contact the appropriate Penn Abroad regional program manager.

Robert Lincoln McNeil Exchange Scholarship

Awarded to a sophomore selected by Penn to spend his or her junior year abroad at the University of St. Andrews, Scotland with funding provided by the St. Andrew's Society of Philadelphia. Royal Holloway International Excellence Study Abroad Scholarships

Royal Holloway College in London has just launched a number of International Excellence Study Abroad Scholarships for students studying in September 2009/January 2010 and beyond. These scholarships are worth £500 for the September-December study option, £1000 for January-June and £2000 for September–June. Applicants will be assessed on the basis of academic excellence and a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 is required for consideration. Based upon the current favorable exchange rate, that’s approximately $730 to $2,920! Contact the appropriate Penn Abroad regional program manager.

St. Andrews Society of Philadelphia Scholarship

One Penn undergraduate may be nominated annually to compete for generous scholarship to spend the junior year at one of the following Scottish universities: Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow, or St. Andrews. Final selection is made by the Society. Contact the appropriate Penn Abroad regional program manager.

School for Field Studies Student Scholarship Fund

Partial tuition assistance for qualified students admitted to study on an SFS program. Semester programs must be approved for Penn academic credit by petition to the appropriate regional Study Abroad Faculty Advisory Committee. Contact the appropriate Penn Abroad regional program manager.

School for International Training, College Semester Abroad Scholarships

Partial tuition assistance for qualified students admitted to study on an SIT program. Semester programs must be approved for Penn academic credit by petition to the appropriate regional Study Abroad Faculty Advisory Committee. Contact the appropriate Penn Abroad regional program manager.

Tel Aviv University, Lowy School for Overseas Students Scholarship Fund

Partial funding for applicants to the Lowy School for Overseas Students who can demonstrate financial need. Contact Shaina Adams, Office of International Programs or Office of Academic Affairs, American Friends of Tel Aviv University, 360 Lexington Ave., New York, NY 10017.

The John Thouron Prize For Summer Study at Pembroke College, Cambridge University

This prize will be awarded to a small, select group of undergraduates from Penn, Harvard, and Yale to pursue an eight-week summer program at Pembroke College, Cambridge on a competitive basis (GPA of at least 3.5). Nine students will be nominated from each university to compete for the award and three from each university will be selected by the Thouron family and their representatives. The award covers the costs of tuition, room and board, and travel to and from the US. University of Sheffield in America Study Abroad Scholarships

The University of Sheffield in England offers a scholarship of a £1,000 for one student coming for a full year of study, four scholarships of £500 each for students coming for the fall semester and four scholarships of £500 each for students coming for the spring semester. Any American national accepting a place at the University of Sheffield is eligible to apply. Contact the appropriate Penn Abroad regional program manager.

University of York Visiting Scholarship Fund

The Visiting Scholarship Fund aims, through the generosity of University of York alumni, to help students realize their international ambitions, and to make the most of the opportunities afforded to them. There are four grants of £500 available for North American students visiting York. The scholarships are open to all students who have been accepted on the existing North American Exchange Programme and preference in the grant making process will be given to those students with more limited resources. The application consists of a personal statement and a form which can be picked up at the Study Abroad office. Students will be required to write a report on their experience when they return and to provide publicity material including photographs for further promotion of the Visiting Scholarship Fund

Attention: If you receive financial aid from Penn and you apply for and receive a scholarship or financial assistance from an external source, you must check with both your SFS counselor and your Penn Abroad program manager to learn how the external funding will be applied to your total program charges. Whether or not you are financially aided, if you win a full tuition scholarship to study for Penn credit at an approved university, you will be charged at minimum the standard study abroad fee for each semester you are away.

Graduate Fellowships

Freie Universitat Berlin Graduate Student Exchange Fellowship in Arts and Sciences

Applications are invited for the graduate student exchange in Arts and Sciences, Biomedical Graduate Studies, the Graduate School of Education, and the School of Engineering and Applied Science for the academic year. One recipient, selected by a faculty committee at each institution, will receive a ten-month fellowship for study and research at the partner university. The fellowship represents provision by the FU Berlin of ten months' support to cover housing, meals, health insurance, fees, and books. The recipient will need to cover international travel as well as incidental expenses.
